The Jewel is the largest Sport Karate event in this region and is a national qualifier for the NBL World Games. Randy has earned a number one seed in Point and Continuous fighting at that event. Sensei Mike ScalesThanks to Sensei Mike Scales for an outstanding seminar on Kata Bunkai Wednesday, May 13, 2008. We are very fortunate to be able to benefit from Sensei Scales deep knowledge of this subject. Sensei RidgewayAnother valuable opportunity to deepen our understanding of Kata bunkai will be at the upcoming seminar by Sensei Derek Ridgeway from England. In June 2007 Derek passed his 7th Dan and now teaches either Wado or Shito-Ryu to an ever growing number of students worldwide, with members throughout Europe, the U.S.A. Canada, India, Bahrain, Nepal, and Venezuela. Sensei Ridgeway will be holding his seminar on Wednesday, May 20th from 7 – 9pm. The cost for this seminar will be a modest $10 to cover expenses. The dojo will be closed except for seminar participants on that night. T-ShirtsWe have ordered school T-Shirts that should be arriving next week. Karate students will be permitted to trade their Gi tops for these T’s during the hot summer months of July and August. There is a limited supply so if you would like to guarantee getting one you can pre-pay at the front desk. T’s are currently available in adult sizes only. Your assistance is greatly appreciated. DemoA reminder that Tashu Shotowa will be performing a demonstration for the Multi-Cultaral festival at the New West Quay this Saturday, May 17th. The demo will take place on the main stage by the Discovery Centre and will start at 11:20am. We will also have a booth set up on the boardwalk for the day so drop by and say hello. Women’s Self-Defence SeminarConstable Chris Chin of the West Vancouver Police department will be conducting a seminar on Women’s Self-Defence on Sunday, June 1st from 1:00 – 3:30. By understanding the psychological and physical components of self-defence, participants will learn to turn fear into action. This seminar is open to members and non-members, no martial arts training is required. Cost of the seminar will be $50 for non-members and $30 for members. Our female members are strongly encouraged to attend. A poster for the event is attached to this e-mail West Coast Can-Am TournamentThe next competitive event that Tashu Shotowa will be participating in will be the West Coast Can-Am, one of the Northwest’s longest running events. The event will be held on Saturday, May 31st at BCIT in Burnaby. If you are interested in entering Kata or Kumite or both, let Sensei Pruim or Sensei Hunter know. GradingA reminder that Grading Night will be Friday, May 30th at 7:00pm. A grading list is posted on the board at the Dojo. Spectators are welcome.
